Science Week: Next Gadget

There was a time when I thought the three things I needed more than anything in life were a
Nokia 3210, a stereo and, yes, a
minidisc player. I can't say I ever owned all at once, but the struggle to do so resulted, I recall, in the continued absence of the more valuable coppers in the family penny-jar, no matter how many 20-pence pieces Mother or Father offloaded in it. Unlike Hitler, failure never fuelled my fervour. I now spend much of my week with an uncharged mobile phone in the pocket of a jacket in which it last died. My stereo attracts dust like a magnet does iron-filings. I never got a
minidisc player - just as the world never 'got' it - and we are currently nearing the 5
th anniversary of my first and only Mp3 player's death.
No, I don't go in for gadgets. No, not anymore. If pushed, I might buy a memory stick. Nothing fancy.
