I all but stopped reading newspapers this year, online or offline. Though it is, I suppose, the field I find most interesting, it would be with some difficulty that I choose a most significant political or social development of 2007. So imagine how little I’ve truly taken in about exciting scientific developments. But I think, as far as the trivial, quotidian stuff goes, Scrabble on Facebook must be given praise. It has brought words to a a generation previously (perceived to be?) obsessed with misspelling words, originally for brevity’s sake, but later for sport. True, many games descend into crowded mazes of two letter words which, when pronounced, sound like little more than utterances. And true, many are unaware of the meaning of their words. But Scrabble is popular once more. Young people want to know if
quark is a legitimate word. Maybe some will look up its meaning. Maybe this generation can surprise a few people. Maybe, just maybe, we can have a richer lexicon than those before us.
Lexicon: 15 points.
